It's a small world and websites are even smaller...
I subscribe to an arty-farty website called Photosig on which a bunch of international chaps and chapettes foist their (often pornographic and usually sub-standard) photographic portfolios and adventures upon one-another. The idea of the site is to critique each other's work and help to improve the overall standard of photography. The practicality is that the professional elite disparage the amateurs who then sell their equipment in a fit of hopeless despair. I take no notice of the barrage of abuse and concentrate on what I like to look at.
Last night I was flicking through the fresh additions to the site looking for inspiration when I came across a rather "artisitic" photo which caught my eye. This wasn't the usual "internal examination shot" so enjoyed by our European cousins - it was, instead, a nicely lit topless shot of a universally attractive model. The thing that really caught my eye wasn't the photograph itself but rather the photographer's name. I instantly recognised the name and, thanks to the inclusion of a mugshot in the artists profile, I was able to determine that this was a guy I went to school with. Not only that but here was a close friend I had not seen or even heard of in over 15 years! I mailed him straight away and got a response. It turns out that he is doing pretty well for himself after a deft bit of real estate dealing and is running of to Trinidad with his fiancée Sophia (the subject of the photo). It was at this point I realised that despite not having seen him for 15 years I knew more about his fiancee than those of the guys I had never lost touch with :-p
As part of the correspondence he also told me about the whereabouts of another old friend and now I am trying to contact him too. I feel an adventure coming on...
What if you went through Friendsreunited and tried to meet up with everyone you remember from school? Where would it take you? I would already be making plans to visit Manchester and Trinidad! I like the sound of that... All I need now is the cash and a passport and writing ability and a book deal and some suntan lotion and an award winning stage show...
